The Mutentie is a fierce reptile capable of considerable damage. Their saliva is riddled with bacteria and untreated bites often end in sepsis and death. Claws are long and sharp, and they're thick whip-like tail is capable of breaking bones. They all seem to posess secondary limbs, ranging from a single extra limb, to pair and even more. Although these limbs give it an advantage, only 70% of extra limbs seem to be functional and it's believed that a great percentage of the smaller individuals die due to these abnormalities. Tumors are also present in most individuals, often since birth, and seem to be mostly benign.
Only a handful of Mutenties reach adulthood and their full size; this is often due to cannibalism by other Mutenties, tumors becoming malignant, useless secondary limbs and environmental causes. Due to this, many only see adult Mutenties despite them being relatively uncommon in most areas.
Mutenties are very territorial and although appear solitary, live in large family groups of up to 20 members. They share territory and food, but do not have strong ties to eachother, simply grouping together to best protect their area. To appear threatening, a Mutentie will stand on its hind legs and flare out its neck, hissing and whipping their tail at the intruder. If their warning is ignored, they will often run at the opposition and attack using their claws and teeth.
It's best to avoid these angry lizards as where there's one there's usually at least 3 more. However, they can be forced into retreat using fire, smoke and noise. Travelling in groups is crucial in Mutentie territory, as these lizards will not take on more than 1 person alone. But if you are alone, just light a fire, fan smoke in their eyes to disturb their senses and make a lot of noise. You may look like an idiot but the lizards don't know that.
